Jane is Societal

Societal- noting or pertaining to large social groups, or to their activities, customs, etc.

The time that the Yellow Wallpaper was written women had restricted rights. Which means they had to stay home all day cleaning and cooking. Waiting for their husbands to come home. They weren’t allowed to leave the house. Women also began to realize that men were taking over them and they knew they had to do something about it. They tried to speak for their rights but it didn’t really work out. Jane had no power over her husband John. She couldn’t do anything about it.

Symbolism in The Yellow Wallpaper

symbolism - symbolic meaning or word

Gillman also referred to as "Jane" uses symbolism in many ways. Like for example she says, " I don't like to look out of the windows even-- there are so many of those creepy women, an they creep so fast." You can tell she is looking at her reflection through the window. Another way she uses symbolism is " I pulled and she shook, I shook and she pulled, and before morning we had peeled off yards of that paper." You can tell that she pulled the wallpaper off because she was so obsessed with that paper. She had the smell on her and even the color of it. She was addicted.

I used these links to help me find out what symbolism meant and finding the picture.

Jane the protagonist

In the story of "The Yellow Wallpaper" Jane is the protagonist. She is stuck in her room by herself for three months with nothing to do. She tries to think of something to do but all she does is look at this hideous yellow wallpaper. She is becoming obsessed with this yellow wallpaper. She is so obsessed that the color is on her and there are dents in the wall. Also, that she can smell the color "yellow" on her. She is actually smelling the wallpaper. But at first, she hated this wallpaper. Now, she is overly obsessed with it. On this wallpaper, there are stripes on it.

The Theme of The Yellow Wallpaper

theme - a subject of discourse, discussion, meditation, or composition;topic

In the Yellow Wallpaper, Jane has a severe disease. This disease makes her crazy. John, her husband, locks her up in a room. He says that it would help her cure her disease with not talking to anyone. But, Jane, tried to convince John that, that wasn't the issue. It just made the problem worse. Jane was getting crazier. her problem got worse as days went on. She then realizes that men were taking over women and women's rights were violated. All Jane did was sit in a room with nothing to do but stare out the window and look at the yellow wallpaper.

These links helped me find what the theme of this story was and find the picture.
